Grid and connections

Connections reform has turned grid positions into one of the most valuable assets a storage business holds. The people who secure, protect and deliver them have become some of the hardest to hire.

When NESO published the outcome of the reformed connections process in December 2025, 83 GW of battery storage received Gate 2 offers, 33 GW of it due to connect before 2030, while 153 GW was not prioritised. Businesses holding offers now have milestone obligations to meet, and the cost of missing them is high.
That makes grid connection leadership a strategic appointment rather than a technical support role. Investors increasingly ask who is managing the grid book, and how.
Head of Grid or Grid Director, setting connection strategy across a portfolio. Grid Connection Manager, managing applications, offers, modifications and milestones with network operators. Power Systems Engineer, running studies and compliance. Network interface and protection specialists for delivery. In other markets, interconnection managers who know the local queue and study processes.
Many of the strongest candidates work for network operators, consultancies and large generators rather than storage developers. Approaching them requires a credible case for the move: a strong portfolio, real influence over strategy and a package that recognises what they would leave behind.
